How to Localize Default Folders in Outlook

Use case: Use this procedure to change the regional settings and localize default folder names in Outlook and Outlook Web Access (OWA). This is useful when users prefer to work in their native language, such as German, French, or Spanish, ensuring that folder names and menu items appear consistently across applications.

To manage the regional settings for default mailbox folders, follow these steps:

  • Open the user’s properties and go to the Mailbox tab.
  • Select the desired Regional Settings from the drop-down list.
    • Changing the Regional Settings affects the menu item language (unless set to use user defaults), and requires an application restart to take effect.
  • Check the “Localize default folders” checkbox to apply the selected language to the default folder names.
    • Default folder localization takes effect immediately.
