Synchronize the Employee Id Attribute from Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID

Synchronize the Employee Id Attribute from Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID

Many organisations rely on the EmployeeId attribute to uniquely identify users across HR systems, identity governance platforms, payroll applications, and automated provisioning workflows. When using a hybrid identity environment, administrators often need to ensure that the EmployeeId attribute in on-premises Active Directory is synchronised with the EmployeeId property in Microsoft Entra ID.

While Microsoft Entra Connect synchronises many common user attributes by default, the EmployeeId attribute requires additional configuration. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough to customize your synchronization rules and bring this valuable data into the cloud.

Why EmployeeId Synchronization is Important

Organizations that utilize HR management systems or advanced Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) tools depend heavily on a unique identifier. Populating and synchronizing the EmployeeId attribute from your on-premises Active Directory (AD) to Microsoft Entra ID provides three core business benefits:

  • Smoothly links your on-premises identity infrastructure with third-party cloud HR systems.
  • Powers dynamic group memberships and automated lifecycle operations based on employee status.
  • Simplifies external and internal audits by ensuring every cloud account traces back cleanly to a verified personnel record.

How to Synchronize the Employee Id Attribute from Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID

Here are the verification steps, configuration process, and validation methods for synchronizing the Employee ID attribute.

1. Set the Employee ID in Active Directory

Follow the below mentioned stepsto set employee ID in Active Directory.

  1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC).
  2. Enable Advanced Features if necessary.
  3. Locate the target user account.
  4. Open the user’s Properties.
  5. Navigate to the Attribute Editor tab.
  6. Locate the employeeID attribute.
  7. Enter the desired Employee ID value (for example, EMP10025).
  8. Click Apply and OK.

Alternatively, use PowerShell:

Set-ADUser -Identity “lukedunphy” -EmployeeID "EMP10025"

Verify the value:

Get-ADUser -Identity “lukedunphy” -Properties EmployeeID | Select Name, EmployeeID

2. Verify Attribute Synchronization Rules

On the Microsoft Entra Connect server:

  1. Open Synchronization Rules Editor.
  2. Review the Inbound Synchronization Rules for user objects.
  3. Confirm that the employeeID attribute is included in the synchronization schema.
  4. Verify that it maps to the metaverse attribute and subsequently to the cloud attribute employeeId.

In modern versions of Microsoft Entra Connect, this mapping is typically configured by default and does not require manual modification.

3. Trigger a Synchronization Cycle

After updating the Active Directory attribute, initiate synchronization.

Open PowerShell as administrator on the Entra Connect server and execute:

Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta

For a complete synchronization:

Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Initial

4. Verify Synchronization in Microsoft Entra ID

After synchronization completes:

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
  2. Navigate to Users.
  3. Select the synchronized user.
  4. Review the user’s properties to verify that the Employee ID field contains the expected value.

Alternatively, use Microsoft Graph PowerShell:

Get-MgUser -UserId "l.dunphy@contoso.com" | Select-Object DisplayName, EmployeeId

How to Troubleshoot Employee ID Attribute Synchronization in Entra ID

If the Employee ID is not synchronized, do the following steps.

  1. Ensure the employeeID attribute contains a value in Active Directory.
Get-ADUser username -Properties EmployeeID

2. Check the status of the synchronization cycle and ensure no errors occurred in Microsoft Entra Connect.

3. Use the Synchronization Rules Editor to verify that employeeID is included in the inbound and outbound synchronization flows.

4. Use the Synchronization Service Manager (miisclient.exe) to inspect connector space object, metaverse object, and attribute flow for employeeID.

5. Ensure there are no export errors preventing the updated attribute from being written to Microsoft Entra ID.

The Pain with Standard Microsoft Tools

The single biggest hurdle for administrators is that the EmployeeId attribute is not synchronized by default in Microsoft Entra Connect.

  • To bridge this gap using standard Microsoft management tools, you must jump through several configuration hoops.
  • You must modify your Entra Connect attribute mapping configuration. This requires diving into the Entra Connect wizard to customize sync options or manually building rules inside the advanced Synchronization Rules Editor.
  • Admins must manually handle data entry on premises first. This means relying on the Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) Attribute Editor or executing Set-ADUser -EmployeeID commands.
  • Once configured, you cannot simply assume it works. You must trigger a sync, connect to an entirely separate cloud interface, and run tests to verify the attribute successfully mapped across directories.

Synchronize the Employee Id Effortlessly Using EasyEntra

While synchronizing the employeeId attribute to Microsoft Entra ID is handled by the standard Microsoft synchronization process, EasyEntra makes managing the attribute in Active Directory significantly easier.

In native Active Directory tools, the employeeId attribute is buried within the Attribute Editor tab, making it difficult to access and unavailable in search results. In contrast, EasyEntra exposes the field directly in the Organization tab and includes it in search results, allowing administrators to quickly locate, view, and update the value without navigating obscure interfaces.

By surfacing the employeeId attribute alongside other commonly used user properties, EasyEntra simplifies administrative workflows and reduces the time required to manage employee identity information in hybrid environments.

This eliminates the need to build custom inbound or outbound synchronization rules in an obscure configuration wizard. Administrators can view, update, and manage the Employee ID property directly alongside the user’s primary profile data in one unified management view.

A correctly synchronized EmployeeId improves data consistency, automation, and compliance across hybrid identity environments!
