How to Create a Hybrid Mail-Enabled User Account

Use case: Use this procedure to create a mail-enabled user account in a hybrid environment. These accounts are created in Active Directory and synchronized to Exchange Online, allowing emails to be forwarded to an external mailbox while keeping the user visible in the global address list (GAL).

To create a hybrid mail-enabled user account, do the following:

  • Right-click the OU where you want to create the user and select New → User.
  • Select Mail-enabled user (external mailbox) from the User Type dropdown.
  • Fill out the Display Name and Email, then click Next.
  • Fill out the UserPrincipalName and SAM Account Name, then click Next.
  • Modify any user settings according to your needs by navigating the tabs on the left-hand side.
  • Click Create to start the user creation process.
